The Gathering Bans Field of the Dead in Standard - Tech Ballad
His villain Magic: The Collection The standard format is no longer available, as Wizards of the Coast announced today that Field of the Dead is banned at the Standard on October 24 at MTG Arena and on October 25 at the tabletop. Field of the Dead has been a troubled card in the last few months of Magic: The Gathering Competitive Game Template, with strong top finishes before Eldraine's Throne was released and it became even more pressing for the metagame variety after the new set was released.
Part of the problem with Field of the Dead is that there are a lot of powerful cards available in the Standard Card pool that, though otherwise well balanced, combine with the earth to make it incredibly powerful. As a land card, interacting with it is difficult - in fact, the best response to the card spinning out of the Standard earlier this fall in Field of Ruin - and is a constant source of battlefield presence once activated, which is difficult for any other deck to keep up with. Advocates asked for the card to be banned for weeks before the Banned & Restricted announcement in early October, but the Wizards of the Coast were unable to make any changes. Following the submission of the Mythic Championship 5 decklists, however, the Wizards announced that they would make an unprecedented second scheduled Banned & Restricted announcement in the same month, leading many to believe that a change was coming.

This change beats the most important card in Bant Golos strategy which was a disproportionate amount of field in the mythical Championship 5. The Wizards of the Coast announced today that Field of the Dead has been banned in the Standard, while giving Pauper players a nice benefit of a ban on the Astrolabe of Akrum. Ian Duke of R&D wrote a blog post to discuss why the company felt the ban on Field of the Dead over some other potential candidates made sense:
"The Field of the Dead ramp decks represent 42% of the field in Mythic Championship V and maintain both a high game rate and a win rate at MTG Arena and Magic Online. After the power and dominance of the archetype, its distorting effect on the metagame , and the unwanted game templates it creates, Field of the Dead is banned in Standard. (This includes Best-of-One and Best of Three Standard at MTG Arena). "
While the ban seems to be necessary, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this form will have. What the post fails to recognize is how widespread Oko, Thief of Crowns and Nissa, the Shaker of Worlds strategies were at Mythic Championship 5, falling just short of the representation-level Golos and Field of the Dead decks. While Duke notes that the company is concerned about how powerful green airplanes are, he suggested the metagame be adapted to the Field of the Dead ban. With these two cards untouched and uncontrolled in the Field of the Dead, Standard could find itself at an even more stagnant point. For Pauper, banning Arcum's Astrolabe is a compact and welcome addition to a form that doesn't take that long, but gets unnecessarily distorted around the powerful mana artificial, and should give deck makers plenty of breathing space.
With MTG in full swing and the MTG Arena a huge leap forward for Wizards of the Coast digital offerings, Magic: The Gathering is facing a renaissance that could lead thousands of new players to the game. Prohibition of repressive cards like Field of the Dead is a necessary evil in presenting a game that stakeholders may want to really get into, and we'll quickly find out if Oko or Nissa is next in the bat to create similar bad game standards. .
