Pistons set roster: Christian Wood makes cut, Joe Johnson waived
DETROIT -- Christian Wood's strong preseason, coupled with his age and potential, earned him a spot on the Detroit Pistons' season-opening roster.
It came at the expense of veteran Joe Johnson, who the team waived today, shortly before finalizing its roster, an NBA source confirmed.
Wood, 24 , was impressive in five exhibition games, averaging 13.2 points (second on the team to Andre Drummond) on 55 percent shooting, while averaging 7.2 rebounds and making 83.3 percent of his free throws (20-of-24).
The 6-10 Wood will be competing with Markieff Morris to back-up Blake Griffin at power forward. Both also could see time at center, along with Thon Maker, filling in for Drummond.
The 6-7 Johnson averaged only 3.8 points in 15 minutes per game in the preseason. Johnson, 38, was attempting a comeback after spending last season in the BIg3. The seven-time NBA all-star came to Pistons camp on a non-guaranteed contract, after canceling workouts for two other teams.
The move was first reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Pistons could have made another move to keep Johnson. Langston Galloway, entering the final year of his contract, is a potential trade candidate. The Pistons opted to keep young guard Khyri Thomas despite his limited action as a rookie last season and in the preseason this year.
