Tua Tagovailoa injured in Tennessee game, taken to locker room
Bryant-Denny Stadium fell silent when Tua Tagovailoa limped to the sideline in the second quarter of Alabama's game with Tennessee.
Sacked on a first down play, he remained in the game for a five-yard pass to Brian Robinson before limping to the sideline when the Tide called a timeout to beat a delay of game flag.
Tagovailoa walked slowly to the injury tent for a few minutes before going to the locker room under his own power but slowly.
ESPN reported after halftime that Tagovailoa would not return for the second half.
It appeared the quarterback's ankle rolled when being taken down for the sack. He suffered two ankle sprains last season in the SEC championship win over Georgia.
Jones entered in Tagovailoa's absence, quickly converted a third down but was sacked three plays later to end the drive with the Tide up 21-10.
"I don't really know," Saban said when asked by ESPN for an update going to the halftime locker room. "I will find out with the trainers as soon as I get inside. He has a twisted ankle of some kind."
Tagovailoa was 11-for-12 for 155 yards with an interception before the injury.
"We have to trust Mac to do the job," Saban said. "He needs to make plays and move the ball."
Jones was 3-for-6 for 42 yards in relief before halftime.
Alabama led 21-10 at halftime after a 41-yard field goal attempt by Joseph Bulovas missed wide left. This post will be updated. Michael Casagrande is an Alabama beat writer for the Alabama Media Group. Follow him on Twitter @ByCasagrande or on Facebook.
